Steve Lefever’s voice has a wide range, and can become just the sound you’re looking for!
I retired at the end of 2015/beginning of 2016, after between 40-45 years in two professions. At my retirement, I had served 12 years as the Director of Community Development for the City of South Gate, CA (100,000 pop). I oversaw the Economic Development/Redevelopment Agency, Planning Services, Building and Safety, Code Enforcement and Housing, Grants and Social Services Divisions for the City, managing budgets between $25-$60 million and staffing as high as 50 people. In total, I have over 35 years experience in land development, economic development, sustainability, and city planning. I served on numerous committees and commissions county wide and in both the public and private sectors. I have worked for two government agencies (South Gate and Manhattan Beach), a large landowner/developer, the Irvine Company, and as a consultant (both for myself and others). While I worked my way thru college and a couple years there after, I worked in the retail grocery industry, moving from Service Clerk (box boy in those days) to Department Manager.
I am a graduate of the California State Polytechnic University at Pomona, with a degree in Urban and Regional Planning. I also attended Orange Coast Community College, where I was a Math and Cultural Anthropology Major. During the course of my career I worked on the development of new large residential communities, regional shopping centers, power generating plants, federal superfund sites (industrial contamination), coastal planning programs, and infill urban developments. I worked the gambit, in upscale beach communities, new master planned communities in the hills of Orange County, CA and dense urban/manufacturing based cities located in the rust belt of the Los Angeles region.
In my spare time I received a certification in Hypnotherapy and did a short stint as a cable radio show host. I have been in nearly a dozen movies, a couple of internet based shows, and several government produced videos on various urban issues, along with a number of internet instructional videos for various product websites, several with lines. I am also a lifestyle model and have worked for major clients, including Samsung, Uber, SNAP Medical and Nihon Kohden America.
I started VO in mid-2016. I got a local non-exclusive agent (for VO, Acting and Modeling) a few months later and the rest is history . . . well sort of anyway, at least up to this point. In Voice-over I have voiced characters in two video games (The Sinking City and Chimera 6) and narrated a museum tour for an exhibit by a Turkish Museum in London, portraying an old man reminiscing about his life. I’ve done one radio commercial (never heard it – it was broadcast elsewhere) and two animated videos, performed about a half dozen VO parts in films (most of which I have yet to hear) and a number of videos for companies or non-profits. I acted as a community Santa Claus for several years (until I decided to lose some weight – I stress ate) and served as a Master of Ceremonies for various community events. I l loved acting as the host and master of ceremonies of the Lovely Legs contest. ☺
In the latter years of my former career I was asked to travel and speak from stage or on panels across the state of California, for various groups and agencies, on planning for climate change, transportation issues and economic development.
As I said, I am a certified hypnotist. I’ve received training in archery and the use of hand guns. I walk/hike and bike ride. I’ve shark fished, was certified in scuba diving, flown gliders and ridden in hot air balloons. Recently, we spent the day at the BMW/Mini Performance Driving Academy in Thermal, CA and had a ball speeding around the race track, pedal to the metal, going as fast as possible, then braking hard for hairpin turns or accelerating through S curves, then sliding and skidding, even spinning on slick and wet surfaces, racing thru a slalom course, and learning to control the car in emergencies, braking hard, under control on curves and riding up the edges, near the rails without hitting them. Fun Stuff.
I like to travel a bit, particularly the usual. My wife and I have recently stayed in bungalows, that sat in the midst of vineyards, roomed in haunted hotels, staying up to see if we could catch a glimpse of a ghost, and boarded in a remote lighthouse, during stormy weather and angry seas, falling asleep listening to the huge waves batter the cliffs beneath us. We’ve stayed in a hilltop Mansion where our room was the former master suite of a baseball team owner, with a balcony larger than most apartments, overlooking an island harbor and drove around, through the surrounding hills, in a topless Hummer taking photos of wild buffalo.
